On the obverse of the coin: above there is the Small Coat of Arms of Ukraine with the semicircular inscription НАЦІОНАЛЬНИЙ БАНК УКРАЇНИ (National Bank of Ukraine); in the centre, against the background of a conventionalized ornamental pattern of flowers and leaves, there is a portrait bust of the founder and first director of the garden with indication of his name thereunder ХРИСТІАН СТЕВЕН (Christian Steven); below there are the coin issue year indication 2012 and the crescent-like legend - П`ЯТДЕСЯТ ГРИВЕНЬ ( fifty hryvnias) on the silver coin
On the reverse of the coin there are depicted: a pond with a fountain in the middle; against the background of waterscape, in the middle distance, a garden part with a pavilion; against the background of the pond below - the legend НІКІТСЬКИЙ / БОТАНІЧНИЙ САД / 1812-2012 (Nikitsky / Botanical Garden / 1812-2012).
The commemorative coin is dedicated to one of the oldest scientific research institutions of our country - the Nikitsky Botanical Garden that was founded in 1812 on the Cape Martian close to Yalta. The Garden is a unique collection of the local and world flora, a paragon of the landscape architecture, a sui generis museum under the open sky with about 20 thousand species of plants from different areas of the globe.
