History of Ukrainian banknotes
Ukrainian banknotes are an essential part of the country’s monetary history. After the collapse of the USSR in 1991, temporary currency notes called karbovanets (coupon-karbovanets) were introduced. They circulated until 1996, reflecting the difficult economic transition during Ukraine’s first years of independence.
In September 1996, a currency reform was carried out, introducing the hryvnia as Ukraine’s national currency. The first hryvnia banknotes had been printed in the early 1990s but were released into circulation only after the reform. They featured modern design, national symbolism, and enhanced security features compared to karbovanets notes.
Since then, the National Bank of Ukraine has issued several series of hryvnia banknotes. Over time, design elements and security features were updated, including watermarks, holograms, microprinting, and security threads. Some denominations were withdrawn or replaced with newer issues.
Modern hryvnia banknotes range from 1 to 1000 UAH, featuring prominent Ukrainian historical figures. Updated series include advanced security elements in line with international standards.
The catalog of Ukrainian banknotes covers both the transitional karbovanets notes of 1991–1996 and all hryvnia issues since 1996. It provides images, descriptions, years of issue, series, and security details—useful for collectors, researchers, and anyone interested in Ukraine’s monetary history.
