Biography

Serhii Kharuk (born 30 January 1960 in Kyiv) is a Ukrainian graphic artist and designer of banknotes, coins and postage stamps; he works in a long-running creative tandem with his twin brother Oleksandr Kharuk. He graduated from the Kyiv Art and Industrial College and the Kyiv Printing Institute, and trained in banknote design at De La Rue Giori. In 1993-2002 he worked on NBU banknote design, and from 2002 on coin design; together with Oleksandr Kharuk and Volodymyr Taran he contributed to the third-generation 2, 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 hryvnia banknotes.

In 1996 he became part of the ArtTrium group. In the UA Coins catalog his coin corpus is almost entirely credited in the artist role: from the first Olympic issues and Sofiyivka to Kyivan Rus, Fauna in Cultural Monuments of Ukraine, Ukrainian Embroidery, Shchedryk, Wheel of Life, the Executed Renaissance and the Ukrainian Cotton series. His collaborative work is marked by precise banknote-style line, dense ornamental structure and an ability to turn a historical theme into a sign that remains readable on a small coin diameter.
