On the coin obverse above there is the Small Coat of Arms of Ukraine with the semicircular legend НАЦІОНАЛЬНИЙ БАНК УКРАЇНИ (National Bank of Ukraine); the composition staple is represented by one of the first (made before 1895) Puliui`s X-ray photographs of a jewelry; below there are bow-shaped inscriptions of the coin face value 5 ГРИВЕНЬ (5 hryvnias) and issue year 2010.

On the coin reverse there is a portrait of Ivan Puliui, to the left whereof there are the inscriptions: above ІВАН/ПУЛЮЙ/1845-1918 (Ivan/Puliui) and below - one of his sayings: `...НЕМА/БІЛЬШОГО ГОНОРУ/ДЛЯ ІНТЕЛІГЕНТНОГО/ЧОЛОВІКА,/ЯК БЕРЕГТИ СВОЮ І/НАЦІОНАЛЬНУ ЧЕСТЬ/ТА БЕЗ НАГОРОДИ/ВІРНО ПРАЦЮВАТИ/ДЛЯ ДОБРА СВОГО/НАРОДУ, ЩОБ/ЗАБЕЗПЕЧИТИ/ЙОМУ КРАЩУ/ДОЛЮ`. (`...There is no/greater honour/for an intelligentsia/professional/than to keep intact his own and/national honour/and without recompense/to devotedly work/for the welfare of his/people, in order/to ensure/their better destiny`.).
The coin is dedicated to Ivan Pavlovych PULIUI (another spelling - Pulyui) (1845-1918), an inventor and physicist, who discovered the peculiar properties of the cathode rays, later on rediscovered by Wilhelm Conrad R?ntgen and named after him, before the latter. Ivan Puliui was the author of nearly 50 research and popular-science works on physics and electrical engineering written in Ukrainian, German and English. In addition, he was proficient in ancient languages and left a large heritage in the area; together with P.Kulish and I.Nechui-Levytskyi he participated in translation of the Bible into Ukrainian.
