NBU 2027 coin issue plan: the alphabet, regions and the first rectangular coin
The National Bank of Ukraine has published its 2027 issue plan for numismatic products and investment coins. The plan includes 52 items: 33 commemorative coins, the investment coin “Archangel Michael” and 18 souvenir releases. Here are the highlights: the new “Ukrainian Alphabet” series, the continuation of “We Are Strong. We Are United”, the first rectangular commemorative coin and new “Hero Cities” medals.

The National Bank of Ukraine has published its 2027 issue plan for numismatic products. On paper it is a table of dates, metals and mintages, but behind those rows there are several strong stories at once: the return of bimetallic base-metal coins, the continuation of a major regional series, new shapes for silver coins and another group of releases tied to Ukrainian culture.
In total, the plan includes 52 items: 33 commemorative coins, one investment coin and 18 souvenir products. Below are the most interesting points from the plan, without the bureaucracy but with the numbers collectors care about.

“We Are Strong. We Are United”: the series keeps mapping Ukraine
The largest block of the 2027 plan is the continuation of the circulating commemorative coins “We Are Strong. We Are United” in the “Ukrainian State” series. The NBU plans 12 more regional releases:
- Volyn region;
- Rivne region;
- Cherkasy region;
- Poltava region;
- Zakarpattia region;
- Ivano-Frankivsk region;
- Zhytomyr region;
- Khmelnytskyi region;
- Vinnytsia region;
- the city of Sevastopol;
- the city of Kyiv;
- Kyiv region.
Each coin is planned with a mintage of 2 million pieces, including 390,000 coins for souvenir products. The plan also lists rolls of 25 coins for each of these releases, with 15,000 rolls planned for every region or city.
“Ukrainian Alphabet”: a new series and the return of bimetal
The main new series of the year is “Ukrainian Alphabet”. In 2027, the NBU plans eight 5-hryvnia coins at once: “A”, “Б”, “В”, “Г”, “Ґ”, “Д”, “Е” and “Є”. All of them are listed as bimetallic coins made of base metals, 28 mm in diameter, with a mintage of 75,000 pieces.
This is especially interesting because base-metal bimetal has been absent from new NBU commemorative releases for quite a while. In our catalogue, the last such coins were the 2018 issues “City of Kyiv”, “City of Sevastopol” and “The Autonomous Republic of Crimea”. So “Alphabet” looks not only like a new theme, but like the return of an entire format.
Series that get new chapters
The plan also continues several already recognizable directions. That is good news: the NBU is not only opening new lines, but also developing stories collectors have already started following.
Ukrainian Avant-Garde
After “Ukrainian Avant-Garde. Oleksandra Ekster”, the series will receive “Ukrainian Avant-Garde. Oleksandr Bohomazov”. The coin is planned as a 10-hryvnia silver issue, Ag 999, 31.1 g, in an octagonal shape. For an art-focused series, this is a very fitting move: the avant-garde theme continues not only through the names, but through the form itself.
Executed Renaissance
The series will be joined by two coins: “Valerian Pidmohylnyi” and “Volodymyra Krushelnytska”. They continue the line after the releases dedicated to Mykola Khvylovyi, Yulian Shpol, Ivan Padalka and Mike Johansen. Both new coins are planned in base metal, with a face value of 5 hryvnias and a mintage of up to 75,000 pieces.
Inhabitants of the Deep Sea
Another set of two commemorative coins, “Inhabitants of the Deep Sea”, is planned for 2027 in the “Flora and Fauna of Ukraine” series. The previous set is already in the catalogue: “A set of two commemorative coins ‘Inhabitants of the Deep Sea’”. The new release keeps the base-metal format, a 5-hryvnia face value for each coin and a mintage of 50,000 sets.
Easter Joy
“Easter Joy. Pysanka” returns in the traditional ovoid shape. It will be a 10-hryvnia silver coin made of Ag 999, weighing 31.1 g, with a mintage of up to 15,000 pieces. The previous 2025 and 2026 issues have already made this subseries stand out: here, the shape supports the theme just as strongly as the design.
Ukrainian Folk Tales
After “Kyrylo Kozhumyaka”, the plan adds the coin “Ukrainian Folk Tales. ‘The Magic Egg’”. This is a well-known Ukrainian fairy tale: the egg symbolizes an inexhaustible source of life, welfare and abundance, while the story itself reminds us how easily a large conflict can begin with something small, and why peace is worth more than any prize.
The first rectangular NBU commemorative coin
One of the most intriguing entries is the silver coin “Flowers on Canvases”. The exact theme is still being developed, but the shape is already listed: rectangular. The NBU catalogue has included round, square, ovoid and octagonal commemorative coins, but a rectangular commemorative coin would be a new step.
The coin is planned in the “Ukrainian Heritage” series: 10 hryvnias, Ag 999 silver, 31.1 g, with a mintage of up to 15,000 pieces.
“Hero Cities” medals
The souvenir products section continues the “Hero Cities” medal line. For 2027, the plan lists:
- Sumy;
- Trostianets;
- Kupiansk;
- Huliaipole;
- Orikhiv.
All medals are listed as CuNiZn, 35 mm in diameter, in “special uncirculated” quality, with a mintage of up to 100,000 pieces. The souvenir block can be followed in the “Souvenir Products” category.
Other notable entries
The plan also includes several strong individual releases:
- “150th anniversary of the birth of Stefan Kulzhenko”;
- “100th anniversary of the birth of Paraska Plytka-Horytsvit”;
- “Art of Mosaic”;
- “Mykhailo Boichuk”;
- “150th anniversary of the birth of Mykola Leontovych”;
- “Year of the Monkey” in the “Oriental Calendar” series;
- the investment coin “Archangel Michael”;
- the traditional set “Coins of Ukraine 2027”.
The plan may, of course, still change: the NBU regularly clarifies dates, mintages and individual themes. But even now, 2027 looks packed: a large regional programme, a new educational series, several artistic silver experiments and a notable souvenir block. We will keep updating the 2027 plan page as new details and coin catalogue pages appear.
