Chaikovskyi Roman

Roman Yaroslavovych Chaikovskyi (born 20 June 1962 in Boryslav, Lviv oblast) is a Ukrainian artist-sculptor of the Mint, connected with the Banknote Printing and Minting Works of the National Bank of Ukraine and coin design development. The special issue of the NBU Visnyk for the 10th anniversary of the monetary reform records his path at the Mint: in 1997 he was hired as a leading sculptor, and from 1998 he worked as chief artist-sculptor of the design development sector. Later profiles and NBU materials identify him as head of the design development department of the Banknote Printing and Minting Works; he has been a member of the Artists’ Union of Ukraine since 1995 and holds the title of Honored Artist of Ukraine.

In the UA Coins catalog Chaikovskyi’s name is connected with more than 100 entries from 1998 to 2026, mostly as sculptor and in a number of issues also as artist. His contribution goes beyond commemorative numismatics: the NBU names Chaikovskyi and Volodymyr Demianenko as sketch authors of the new circulating 1- and 2-hryvnia coins, while for the 2018-design circulating 10-hryvnia coin Chaikovskyi is listed as artist together with Demianenko and as sculptor of the coin bearing Ivan Mazepa’s portrait.

Works that show Chaikovskyi’s range include The Nativity of Christ, which received international recognition in the Most Inspirational Coin category, the Monuments of Ancient Cultures series, Scythian Gold, Euromaidan, 100 Years of P. I. Tchaikovsky National Music Academy of Ukraine, Ivan Fedorov, Archangel Michael, the NBU commemorative medal Taras Shevchenko and the circulating commemorative coin Territorial Defense Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, where he is listed among the sculptors. Beyond numismatics, his profile notes monumental works including Themis for the building of the Higher Commercial Court of Ukraine and a monument to aircraft designer P. V. Balabuiev.
