Obverse: on top of the coat of arms of the USSR with 15 turns of tape underneath the letters "USSR", the symbol below if the coin denomination, the number "1" and below the word "RUBLE", the bottom edge year of issue "1990".

Reverse: at centre an image of J. Rainis. The right two lines with the date "1865", "1929",indicating the years of the life of the poet. At the bottom - the facsimile of the poet. To the left of the circumference "jānis Rainis".

Edge: two pressed the inscription "ONE RUBLE", between them the two pressed square pixels.
