Obverse: on top of the coat of arms of the USSR with 15 turns of tape underneath the letters "USSR", the symbol below if the coin denomination, the number "1" and below the word "RUBLE", the bottom edge year of issue "1988".

Reverse: just to the left of the center half-length portrait of L. N. Tolstoy. To the right of it along the outer rim of the coin top to bottom is the inscription "L. N. TOLSTOY" and the years of the life of a writer "1828 - 1910".

Edge: two pressed the inscription "ONE RUBLE", between them the two pressed square pixels.
